![]() The more massive the bulge, the more massive the black hole. This idea is bolstered by a relationship, developed by Hubble observations, that a black hole’s mass is tied to the mass of a galaxy's central bulge of stars. The survey suggests that black holes may have been intimately linked to the birth and evolution of galaxies. A Hubble census of galaxies showed that supermassive black holes are commonly found in a galaxy’s center. If no black hole were present, the line would be nearly vertical across the scan.Īstronomers used Hubble to measure the velocities at which stars and gas swirl around a black hole, to catalog black holes in active and quiescent galaxies. The larger the excursion from the centerline-seen as a green and yellow along the center strip-the greater the rotational velocity. The change in wavelength, or color, records whether an object is moving toward or away from the observer. Astronomers mapped the motions of gas entrapped in the black hole’s powerful gravitational pull. The Hubble image on the left shows the core of the galaxy where the suspected black hole dwells. The extreme velocities indicated the presence of an ultra-compact central mass that could only be explained as a black hole. Hubble’s spectrograph measured the speed of gas trapped in the gravitational field of a black hole at the center. Astronomers used spectroscopy (dividing starlight into its component colors) to “weigh” a black hole to see if the amount of its unseen mass far exceeded the mass that could be attributed to stars alone. In 1997, Hubble astronomers looked at the nearest “mini-quasar,” the brilliant core of the giant elliptical galaxy M87. Next, Hubble greatly bolstered the idea of supermassive black holes by measuring their masses, providing the first observational measurements that proved their existence. Engorged with gas, the black hole loses some material to blazing jets that shoot out of a galaxy’s center like a blowtorch, which are easily resolved by Hubble. Hubble revealed that most of the galaxies were seen in the process of colliding with other galaxies, and, according to theory, these violent encounters would fuel a central black hole. These galaxies are greatly outshined by the quasar’s “floodlight-beam” brilliance. ![]() ![]() Because of Hubble’s ability to discern faint objects in the vicinity of bright objects, the telescope made definitive observations showing that quasars (very distant, compact sources of intense radiation) dwell in the cores of galaxies. In the early 1990s, Hubble began to provide compelling circumstantial evidence for the existence of gargantuan black holes measuring millions or billions of times the mass of our Sun. The black hole is 15 times the mass of our Sun. In the early 1970s, the first black-hole candidate, Cygnus X-1, was discovered in X-rays coming from superheated material swirling around a black hole orbiting a normal star. The actual term “black hole” wasn’t coined until six decades later by astrophysicist John Wheeler. His theory described an event horizon swallowing light, which would prohibit telescopes from ever directly seeing such objects. Hubble’s sharp vision has helped astronomers solve a number of mysteries about supermassive black holes, including their abundance and their influence on galaxies in the evolving universe.Įinstein’s theory of general relativity first described the characteristics of such hypothesized gravitationally collapsed objects. This is clear evidence that the region harbors a massive black hole because it contains only a fraction of the number of stars that would be necessary to create such a powerful attraction. ![]() ![]() This high velocity is the signature of the tremendous gravitational field at the center of M87. In fact, it’s a bargain considering what you get in return. Yes, long-term care insurance is definitely worth it. Is Long-Term Care Insurance Worth Buying? Or if those of you who aren’t self-insured love the idea of potentially living out your last days without a penny to your name and at the mercy of the government, passing up long-term care insurance is also a good option. If the average price tag of long-term care is $324,900, you can see how this can go south-really fast. The average baby boomer only has $202,000 saved for retirement. So who needs long-term care insurance? Anyone who’d feel uncomfortable cutting a check for $250,000–300,000. And while Medicaid-the government program designed for people who truly don’t have any money-will cover some long-term care expenses, it should never be your first choice because you’ll have to spend all your assets before you receive help. Now, you might be thinking: What about government programs? Can’t they help? Don’t make the mistake of believing Medicare will cover long-term care costs. That means they’ll end up needing on average $324,900 in care! 4 And while regular health insurance won’t cover these costs, long-term care insurance will. Good and violent then, should be your line on this production, but none too clever. But although Billington finds it a "visceral" production "that certainly captures the chaos of a divided city", he grieves the loss of "the play's subtle characterisation and sophisticated political debate". The critics like Greg Hicks's conceited Caesar, and most approve of Darrell D'Silva's debauched Mark Antony. "This is, in effect, the Rome of the BBC/HBO television series," reckons Ian Shuttleworth in the Financial Times, "in its graphic depiction of what is claimed to be the unsalubrious historical reality." (He means insalubrious, but we'll let it go.) "The assassination of Caesar, as recorded in Suetonius," explains Michael Billington, writing that name on the blackboard, "is a prolonged, messy fight to the death, and is ironically echoed, on the plebeian level, by the vicious street murder of Cinna the poet." And violence, you will remember from her production of Titus Andronicus at the Globe, is Bailey's speciality. Roll on his Prince of Denmark. And this point, the critics agree, is that Rome was a violent place. The central performances go some way to make up for this, Justin Salinger's Newton sneaking around in a camp periwig, and John Heffernan making the conscience-racked Möbius – slipping between madness and clear-eyed despair – nearly as fascinating as Hamlet. But now Dürrenmatt's scenario seems a puzzling allegory, like a theorem in cryptic algebra. The play would surely have felt more urgent in 1961, when nuclear arms were proliferating. Dr Von Zahnd (Sophie Thompson in near panto mode) is the hunched spinster who runs this madhouse, assuring an irked detective (John Ramm) that she knows who's dangerous and who's not. On top of these delusions, they keep murdering their nurses, whom they claim to love. ![]() A trio of mad (or maybe pretend-mad) scientists are holed up in a sanatorium, dressed as Einstein, Newton and Möbius. Yet despite scintillating performances, there's something sterile about this darkening comedy. Now comes a rare revival of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's The Physicists, a satire-going-on-ethical debate about scientific progress and moral responsibility. Lastly, artistic director Josie Rourke's first season at the Donmar has become daringly varied. ![]() |
